Overview
Electrical panel problems we repair
Customers call about a “breaker box” or a “fuse box” that has started to act up. The signs are usually easy to notice: a burning smell, a buzzing or hot panel, rust, a breaker that reads off but is on, or a circuit that drops out now and then. Panel repair starts from $99, and we give the price on the call. See our electrical services overview for the rest of what we do.
If you smell smoke or burning, do this first
If there is smoke or flames, get everyone outside and call 911 first. If you smell burning plastic or the panel feels hot, do not touch or open it, and call us. We offer 24/7 emergency service. See our emergency electrician page.
What we do
What a panel repair visit can cover
Every price in this section: starting price; your cost may differ.
Covers and exposed openings
Missing covers for unused openings, fitted with the parts the panel’s maker approves.
Loose or corroded connections
A connection found at the panel that is loose, worn or corroded is repaired to the equipment instructions.
A failed part in the panel
A damaged component replaced where the rest of the panel is sound.
A circuit that drops out now and then
An intermittent loss on one circuit traced to where it starts.
A damaged circuit directory
A new holder fitted, and uncertain circuits traced so the labels can be trusted.
A hot or smoking panel
An urgent check. Call us, and see the safety note above.
Are you on a fuse box and thinking of switching to breakers? That is a replacement, and you can read about replacing the whole panel. When a single breaker is the problem, read about circuit breaker repair.
Pricing
Panel repair pricing: where the $99 starts
How much does electrical panel repair cost? It starts from $99. That is the starting price for a repair, not a price for a new panel.
Panel repair is priced on the phone. We cannot responsibly give a figure for a panel we have not seen, and a technician has to look at it before we confirm the work.
Every price in this section: starting price; your cost may differ.
| Service | Starting price | What changes the final price | Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical panel repair | From $99 | The nature of the fault, parts, access, the age and brand of the panel, and whether a replacement is advised | Quoted on the call |
Decision guide
Repair the panel or replace it? How a technician decides
| Repair the panel | Replace the whole panel | Replace one breaker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical signs | A loose connection, a missing cover, a damaged part, a circuit that drops out | Heavy corrosion, damage inside the panel or a panel the inspector rejects | One breaker trips, will not reset or feels hot |
| What is done | The faulty part is fixed and tested | The old panel comes out and a new one goes in | That single breaker is swapped |
| Page | This page | Replacing the whole panel | When a single breaker is the problem |
A loose wire alone is not a reason to buy a new panel. The technician looks at the metal contact surface and the enclosure as well. If they are sound, a targeted repair is usually enough. If you are told the whole panel must go, ask what damage was found.
The visit
From diagnosis to a safe panel: the repair sequence and what to do while you wait
- Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes.
- Tell us what you see, hear or smell, and send photos of the panel if you can.
- We agree a time. Same-day service is possible in many cases, and if not, it is usually the next day or within a few days.
- The panel is safely isolated and inspected, and the technician tells you what was found.
- We discuss the price, and you decide.
- The repair is done, tested under load and labeled.
- While you wait
A photo of the panel does not replace a visit, because a technician has to see it. While you wait, do not open the panel, and keep the area around it clear. If you notice heat, a burning smell, smoke or no power after panel work, treat it as urgent and call us.
Field notes
Small panel faults, real consequences: a loose terminal, missing covers and a damaged directory
A kitchen branch in a home with a 150A panel kept losing power, even though its breaker stayed on. The owner asked whether that meant buying a new panel. Inspection found one loose terminal. The metal contact and the insulation beyond it were intact. The loosened connection had become an intermittent high-resistance one. We renewed it to the equipment instructions and checked the comparable connections. Loaded voltage stayed stable and the repaired point showed no abnormal heating. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 110.14 and 408.
A panel repair decision must account for the contact surface and enclosure, not only the loose wire.
Our electrician
Our electrician’s advice: ask what damage was found before agreeing that the whole panel requires replacement. Have any change in heat, sound or supply reliability checked promptly.
A panel missing its covers
A panel had lost the covers for its unused openings after earlier work. We identified the enclosure and fitted the covers its maker approves. We checked the inside for debris and unrelated damage, and recorded what we found instead of selling a bigger job.
These cases are about small, ordinary faults. None of them involved a burning smell or a hot panel, which are urgent and should not wait.

Common questions
Panel repair FAQ: smoke or burning smell, repair vs replace, fees and insurers
My panel is smoking or smells like burnt plastic. What do I do?
If there is smoke or flames, get out and call 911 first. If you only smell burning, do not touch or open the panel, and call us. We offer 24/7 emergency service. See our emergency electrician page.
Does my panel need replacing, or can it be repaired?
It depends on what was found inside it. A loose connection or a missing cover can usually be repaired. Damage to the panel itself may mean replacing it. See the table above.
Is it the panel or just a breaker?
If one breaker trips or will not reset, it is often the breaker. See circuit breaker repair. If several circuits are affected or the panel is hot, it may be the panel.
How much does a repair cost?
Panel repair starts from $99. It is a starting price, and your cost may differ. We give the price on the call.
Do you charge to come out?
Panel repair is priced on the phone. Free estimates apply only to panel upgrades, panel installation, breaker replacement and whole-house rewiring, so we discuss the price with you on the call.
Can you repair a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel?
Those panels are often flagged by insurers and inspectors. We look at the one you have and tell you what we find. If it has to go, see replacing the whole panel.
Does my insurer need a letter?
Ask your insurer what they require, and tell us when you book. We will tell you what we can document for the work we do.
Will you install a breaker I supply?
Tell us on the call. We would rather talk about the part before the visit.
Do you offer a warranty?
Red Electricians offers a standard warranty on its work. Ask your technician for the details when you call.
