Local conditions

Coastal exposure and tight access: what it changes on a Malibu job

On our Malibu jobs, marine moisture affected an exterior charging disconnect, and a narrow driveway limited where materials could be staged. We scheduled the work around the access, so residents knew when a vehicle could not pass.

We do not state Malibu coastal-zone or wildfire-area rules here. Ask us on the call what applies to your address.

Field notes

Field notes from Malibu: a charging disconnect after marine fog

✓ Completed Jul 6, 2024

A charging disconnect after marine fog

A Malibu coastal garage had an exterior vehicle-charging disconnect, and the charger reported supply errors after marine fog. Replacing the charger was only one possible explanation, so we compared the supply equipment with the working charger and checked the enclosure entries. We found corrosion at the disconnect’s cable entry and a worn contact surface. Salt-laden moisture had entered an enclosure not built for the exposure. We replaced the disconnect with an assembly rated for the conditions and corrected its cable entries, and charging stayed stable through a long session. Permit requirements were confirmed locally and an inspection was arranged. The charger itself was fine.

Coastal exposure can make the connection enclosure the weakest part of a charging system.

Our electrician from Malibu

Our electrician’s advice: include visible corrosion around cable entries in a charging service report.

Deck lights that stayed off the neighbors’ bedrooms

The deck needed light on its steps, with bedroom windows facing several possible fixture spots. We walked the route after dark, chose shielded, marine-suitable fixtures and set their height and aim with the owner present.

✓ Job completed Jun 25, 2025

A gate operator that lost power after the driveway was resurfaced

We found a damaged underground conduit section, replaced it through a small opening and renewed the conductors, so the finished driveway stayed intact. Residents were told when the narrow approach would be blocked.
