Overview

Installing an EV charger at home: what to expect, and whether you can bring your own

Yes, we install home chargers. EV charger installation starts from $399. A lot of callers already own a charger and only need the circuit or the outlet put in. That is fine too. Tell us the make and model when you call, and the technician confirms it will work with the circuit we plan. For the rest of our work, see every electrical service we offer.

Moving into a new home? Book before your move-in date, so the circuit is ready when the car is.

What we do

Home EV charger installation options

Every price in this section: starting price; your cost may differ.

1

A dedicated 240V circuit

A circuit of its own from the panel to the place where the car parks. Starts from $399.

2

Outlet installation for a plug-in charger

A 240V outlet, for a charger that plugs in.

3

A hardwired wall connector

A charger wired straight to its circuit.

4

Garage, driveway and townhouse runs

The cable route is planned for your property, including long runs and surface routes.

5

A charger you already bought

We install the circuit or outlet for a charger you supply.

6

Moving a charger to a new home

The circuit at the new place, ready before you arrive.

7

Renting, townhouse, condo or HOA

Landlords and associations often need to approve a charger first. Get the approval and, if you can, a written quote before you book. Tell us when you call so we can plan a route that suits your building.

8

A charger or outlet that is hot, melting or tripping

Stop using a charger or an outlet that is hot or melting, and call us. See outlet repair. We install chargers, and we do not repair the charger itself.

Pricing

How much does EV charger installation cost? Starting at $399 and what changes it

How much does it cost to install a home EV charger? It starts from $399. That is where pricing begins, not a total.

Distance matters more than most people expect. A long run needs thicker cable and more careful design. We discuss the price on the phone before anyone comes out, and we explain it before the work starts.

Level 2 charging needs a 240V supply. A dryer outlet is a different thing, so ask us before you plan to share it. Will you need a bigger panel? That depends on your service and everything else running at once. See electrical panel upgrade for when that applies, and read about how panel capacity affects EV charging. For a subpanel in the garage, see electrical panel installation.

The visit

How an EV charger install gets done, from the first call to the walkthrough

  • Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes.
  • Tell us about the car, the charger, the parking spot and the panel. Photos of the panel and the garage help.

  • The electrician checks the site and the panel and discusses the price on the call.
  • Where the city requires a permit, it is arranged, and inspection is coordinated.
  • The circuit and charger are installed, tested and commissioned, and you get a walkthrough.

Field notes

Garage charging cases: spare capacity, long runs and unused circuits

✓ Completed Jan 30, 2024

A home garage with a 200A service had an unused planned circuit route, and the owner wanted dependable overnight charging from a hardwired unit. A load calculation supported 40A charging on a correctly designed 50A branch. We installed a listed hardwired charger, set its permitted current and documented the setting. The car held its output through a sustained session. A charging permit was filed with the calculation and the specifications, and the final inspection was coordinated before routine use. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 625 and 210.

Commissioned current settings belong to the circuit design, not just the charger’s menu.

Our electrician

Our electrician’s advice: confirm the car’s usual parking direction before selecting the charger mounting position. Testing the cable reach with the parked car avoided an awkward installation.

A garage with limited spare capacity

✓ Completed Apr 24, 2024

The family’s evening routine already ran other large electric loads, so unrestricted charging was not a safe assumption. We designed a listed, demand-managed supply, tested how it responded when other big loads ran and documented the settings.

A long run to the parking spot

✓ Completed Mar 8, 2024

The parking point was far from the distribution equipment, so we designed for voltage drop and chose conductors for the whole route, then checked the supply during real charging.
