Overview

Breaker tripping, hot or won't reset? What to do first

Callers describe it in their own words: the breaker is “popping”, “flipping”, “won’t click back on” or “staying in the middle”. A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job, so the question is what it is protecting you from. Circuit breaker repair starts from $79, and you can call (213) 322-0128 to talk through the problem. See our full range of electrical services for everything else we do.

Safety first

  • If the breaker is hot to the touch, buzzes loudly or you smell burning, stop using that circuit and call us. If there is smoke or fire, call 911.
  • Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again. Report recurring trips instead of forcing it.
  • If you are in a rental, tell your landlord, and tell us who can approve the work.

For an urgent problem, see our urgent electrical help page. We offer 24/7 emergency service.

The visit

How a technician finds and fixes the faulty breaker

  • Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes. A photo of the panel and of the breaker can help.
  • Tell us what the breaker does, what is running when it trips, and whether it is a rental.
  • We agree a time. Same-day service is possible in many cases, and if not, it is usually the next day or within a few days.
  • The electrician checks the circuit and the breaker, and isolates the load.
  • We discuss the price, and you decide.
  • The breaker is repaired or replaced, and the circuit is tested under load.

Field notes

Breaker cases from the field: oven circuit, stuck breaker, wrong type

✓ Completed Aug 1, 2024

An oven branch in a home lost power now and then without a visible overload. The owner could describe it happening during the heating cycle, so we reproduced that load. A rated-load test found inconsistent continuity inside the breaker, while its connection to the bus was sound. A breaker is a sealed device, so we replaced it with the exact listed type and checked the branch. The oven completed both preheat and hold. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 240 and 110.

A breaker complaint requires distinguishing device failure from an actual circuit fault.

Our electrician

Our electrician’s advice: give the appliance’s operating stage when you describe an unexplained breaker interruption. Report recurring trips and avoid resetting repeatedly.

A breaker that would not stay set

✓ Completed Oct 5, 2022

The customer had reset it several times and assumed the room wiring was damaged. The breaker still would not stay set with its branch disconnected, which showed the device had failed. We replaced it with a listed compatible one and checked the circuit before reconnecting.

The wrong breaker after a remodel

✓ Completed Mar 7, 2025

A breaker fitted during a room alteration physically fitted the panel but was not the right match. We compared the labels and the circuit requirements, fitted the specified one and checked the room’s wiring so the new device did not hide another problem.

None of these cases is a breaker that trips because an air conditioner, microwave or charger overloads the circuit. That is a very common reason for trips, and we explain it in the blog linked above.
