Overview
Light fixture repair: when lights flicker, dim or go out
A light that misbehaves can be a bulb, a fixture, a driver, a switch or dimmer, the wiring, or the breaker. We find which one before we fix anything, so you are not paying to replace the wrong part. Lighting repair starts from $49, and we talk through the price on the call. For the rest of our work, see our electrical services overview.
Call us when a light fails in one fixture, in a group of fixtures or in a whole part of the home. Do not wait if a fixture is hot, smells of burning or buzzes loudly. That is a job for our emergency electrician service.
What we do
Lighting problems we trace and fix, one symptom at a time
Every price in this section: starting price; your cost may differ.
Lights that will not turn on
We check the bulb, the fixture, the switch and the circuit, in that order of effort, and tell you which it is.
Dim lights when appliances start
Lights that sag when a large appliance kicks in can point to a wider supply problem, not the fixture.
Half a run out, half steady
When some lights pulse and the rest stay steady, the fault is often in one linked group or its connection.
A pendant that flickers after you moved it
Changing a pendant’s height can strain a hidden connection in the canopy.
A light that fails only when dimmed
Fixtures with sensors or dimming can fail in one output state and look fine at full brightness.
Buzzing, hot or cycling recessed lights
A fixture that hums, runs hot or switches itself off and on needs a close look.
Outdoor and commercial lights
Dead sections, timers and sensors outside, and lights out in a store or office. See our commercial electrical services.
Flickering lights
Flickering is one symptom with several causes: a loose connection, a driver or dimmer that does not match the lamp, or a problem on the circuit. We test before we decide. For the longer explanation, read why lights flicker.
What to tell us when you call
- The fixture type, and how many lights are affected.
- Whether the lights pulse together or only within one group.
- Which breaker feeds them, and whether it trips.
- What you have already tried, and the ceiling height.
- A photo of the fixture, if you can.
Pricing
What lighting repair costs and what changes it
How much does lighting repair cost? Lighting repair starts from $49. The final price depends on what is wrong, and we explain it on the call.
A single loose connection and a damaged run of wiring are very different jobs, so the price follows the cause.
Every price in this section: starting price; your cost may differ.
| Service | Starting price | What changes the final price | Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighting repair | From $49 | Whether the fault is the bulb, the fixture, a driver, the wiring or the breaker; ceiling height and access; number of fixtures; parts | Quoted on the call |
Decision guide
Bulb, fixture, wiring or breaker: finding the real cause
| What you notice | What we test | Likely path | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| One light dead, others fine | Bulb, socket and fixture | Repair, or replace the fixture | Lighting installation |
| A group pulses while others stay steady | Driver output and the connection to that group | Repair the connection | This page |
| Lights dim or flicker across rooms | Circuit and supply connections | Wiring repair | Wiring repair |
| Breaker trips when the light is on | The circuit and the fixture load | Find why the breaker trips | Circuit breaker repair |
If the answer is to replace the fixture, we say so, and you can read about installing new lighting. Repair is for lights and circuits that already exist.
The visit
What a repair visit looks like from call to test
- Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes.
- Tell us what the lights do and when it started. Photos help.
- We agree a time. Same-day service is possible in many cases, and if not, it is usually the next day or within a few days.
- The electrician tests the fixture and the circuit and explains what was found.
- We discuss the price, and you decide.
- The repair is done, and we test every output state, not just a moment of full brightness.
Field notes
Field notes: cabinet-light driver, hanging pendant and stair sensor
Half the lights in a dining area with twelve low-voltage cabinet lights pulsed while the rest stayed steady. Driver output held at 24V, but one connector group showed intermittent continuity. We renewed that connector group and added strain relief, because the driver and the lights tested sound. All twelve lights stayed steady through switching and dimming. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 411 and 110.
Steady driver output helps separate a lighting connection problem from a power-supply fault.
Our electrician
Our electrician’s advice: tell the electrician whether the lights pulse together or only within one linked group. Comparing the steady and affected groups is what narrowed this repair to one connection, and the homeowner kept the lights they already liked.
A pendant that flickered after its height changed
Adjusting the pendant had put strain on a hidden connection inside the canopy. We renewed the damaged flexible connection and refitted the approved support. We tested the pendant after assembly and again once it had warmed up.
A stairwell light that failed only when its sensor dimmed it
The fitting had two output states, so a quick check at full brightness looked normal. We recreated the reduced-output command, found the failed control connection and tested both brightness states and the change between them.

Common questions
Lighting repair questions from real calls
Why do my lights flicker?
A loose connection, a driver or dimmer that does not match the lamp, or a circuit problem can all cause it. Read why lights flicker for the longer answer.
Is it the bulb or the wiring?
A single dead light is often the bulb or the fixture. Several lights failing together, or lights that dim when an appliance starts, point to the wiring or the circuit. We test to find out.
How much does it cost?
Lighting repair starts from $49. It is a starting price, and your cost may differ. The cause sets the final price, and we explain it on the call.
Can you repair commercial lighting?
Yes. See our commercial electrical services.
Do you repair outdoor and landscape lights?
Yes. Dead sections, timers and sensors outside are part of lighting repair.
Is a hot or buzzing fixture an emergency?
It can be. If a fixture is hot, smells burnt or sparks, switch it off and call us. See our emergency electrician service.
Do you offer a warranty?
Red Electricians offers a standard warranty on its work. Ask your technician for the details when you call.
