Overview

Is aluminum branch wiring a problem in your home?

Aluminum wiring replacement usually means one of two things: repairing the connections at switches, outlets and fixtures with pigtail connectors or other approved connectors, or replacing the wiring with copper. We look at the home and recommend the method that fits. Repair starts from $29 per connection, and you can call (213) 322-0128 or book a visit. See every electrical service we offer for the rest of our work.

Aluminum wiring is wire made of aluminum instead of copper, found in some older homes. The concern is at the connections: switches, outlets, fixtures and junctions. A warm or discolored switch is a sign to call us. Do not take the cover off and fix it yourself.

Pricing

Aluminum wiring pricing: per connection, not per house

How much does it cost to change aluminum wiring? Repair starts from $29 per connection. That price covers repairing one individual connection. It does not cover replacing all the aluminum wiring, and extra materials cost extra.

The total grows with the number of connections. We do not guess a total for your house. We explain the price on the phone before anyone comes out. A whole-house copper rewire is a different job, and you can read about it on our whole-house rewiring page.

Decision guide

Fix the connections or replace with copper?

The right choice depends on the home, the condition of the wiring and your plans. The table shows the options. Some customers call the connection fix “remediation”, and it is the same job we describe here as repair.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has described complete replacement with copper as the best method available. Our technician will still tell you which option fits your home. If an older panel is found alongside aluminum wiring, you can read about an electrical panel upgrade.

The visit

How an aluminum wiring job runs

  • Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes. Tell us the age of the house, which switches run warm and any renovation plans.
  • We agree a time. Same-day service is possible in many cases, and if not, it is usually the next day or within a few days.
  • The electrician identifies the wire type from the cable jacket marking and finds the connections.
  • The connections are counted and mapped.
  • We explain the options and the price, and you decide.
  • The work is done, tested and tidied, and you receive a record of what was changed.

Tell us if decorative switches or outlets were changed on an older aluminum-wired branch. It helps us find where to look first.

Field notes

Field notes: warm switches, kitchen renovations and phased copper

✓ Completed Jul 14, 2026

A 1970s home with aluminum branch wiring had several switches that ran warm and showed discoloration after a decorative device change. Inspection found aluminum wires on devices that were not identified for that connection, and the heat came from those new connections. The owner compared the accepted options and chose permanent branch replacement, so we replaced the affected runs with copper in daily room groups, which kept the occupied house usable. The permit was prepared, the rough inspection came before the walls were closed, and each finished zone passed connection and loaded-circuit checks. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 110.14 and 300.

Conductor compatibility has to follow the actual termination, not the appearance of the new switch.

Our electrician

Our electrician’s advice: tell the electrician when decorative devices were changed on an older aluminum-wired branch.

A kitchen renovation that exposed aluminum wiring

✓ Completed Aug 15, 2026

A kitchen renovation exposed aluminum wiring at several appliance points. With the cabinets still open, the owner chose to replace those circuits with copper before the finished surfaces covered them. We mapped the wiring, coordinated the inspections with the cabinet schedule and gave the owner documents showing which circuits were replaced.

Copper conversion, room by room

✓ Completed May 16, 2026

A homeowner chose to convert to copper while decorating, one room at a time. We mapped the circuits first so room boundaries were not mistaken for circuit boundaries, finished each replacement before the room was decorated and kept a record of which circuits were done.

Customer feedback

What customers say about wiring safety work

We have no review about aluminum wiring itself, and we will not stretch one to fit. What we can show is how customers rate our profiles where older wiring is common: Montecito 4.9 from 57 Google reviews, Topanga 5.0 from 69 and Palm Springs 5.0 from 83 (checked Oct 8, 2026). These ratings are for each location, not an average. Read what our customers say.

Common questions

Aluminum wiring questions answered

How do I tell if I have aluminum wiring?

Cable jackets are often marked “AL” or “aluminum”. Copper-clad is a different thing. Do not open panels or boxes yourself. We identify the wire type on a visit.

Repair starts from $29 per connection, and the total depends on how many connections you have. It is a starting price and your cost may differ. Extra materials cost extra.

A connection repair fixes the connection. A copper rewire replaces the wiring. Our technician recommends which fits your home. See whole-house rewiring.

Yes. Repairing the connections is the other main option. We explain both on the call.

The concern is at the connections, where heat can build up. Warm switches or discolored outlets are a reason to call us. If you smell burning or see smoke, stop using the circuit and call 911 if there is fire.

We do not give insurance or resale advice. Our blog post on insurance and resale risk covers the topic, and your insurer can tell you what it needs.

Not necessarily. The condition of the wiring and the accepted remedies need a proper assessment first.

Red Electricians offers a standard warranty on its work. Ask your technician for the details when you call.
