Overview

Surge protector installation at the panel: what it is and who needs it

Whole-house surge protector installation puts a protective device at your electrical panel. It limits voltage spikes before they reach the circuits in your home. Installation starts from $99, with labor, the surge protector and standard materials included. Non-standard materials cost extra. Call (213) 322-0128 or send the form. See our full range of electrical services for the rest of our work.

Owners usually ask after losing a TV, a freezer or other equipment, or while planning a panel upgrade. For how whole-home protection works, read our blog on whole-house surge protectors.

A surge protector has limits. It cannot promise that nothing will ever fail. Ask your electrician what the device you choose is rated for.

The visit

How an installation visit works, from assessment to status check

  • Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes. A photo of the panel helps.
  • We agree a time. Same-day service is possible in many cases, and if not, it is usually the next day or within a few days.
  • The electrician checks the panel, the free space and the grounding.
  • The device is chosen to suit the system.
  • It is installed with the power off at the panel. Tell us how long you can be without power, and we plan around it.
  • We check the connections and show you the status indicator and what it means.

The technician gives you the time for the job on the call.

Field notes

Field notes: home theatre, detached office and a panel upgrade

✓ Completed Nov 21, 2025

A home with sensitive entertainment equipment had no surge protection at the panel, and the owner wanted a plan after nearby equipment was damaged. The panel had a suitable connection position and a verified ground. We installed a listed device that suits the system, following its connection layout, and showed the owner its status display. The panel did not need replacing. The job was screened for permit needs and the required inspection was documented. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 242 and 110.

The connection arrangement matters to a surge device as well as its advertised rating.

Our electrician

Our electrician’s advice: ask how the installed device signals when it needs attention.

A detached office

✓ Completed Apr 19, 2024

A detached office had more than one way for a surge to reach its equipment, so a power strip alone would not do. We identified the power and communications entries, picked compatible protection, documented the ground and gave the owner a diagram of what was installed. It is a plan for the connections we assessed, not a promise against lightning or every failure.

Surge protection added with a panel upgrade

✓ Completed Dec 24, 2018

A panel upgrade was already being isolated and inspected, so we added a surge protective device as part of that work. It was connected to the device’s instructions, and the owner watched the status indicator at handover.

Customer feedback

What customers say about our electrical work

No review is about a surge protector installation. This comment from our Sherman Oaks profile is about repeat surges in a home, so it is a related job. The profile is rated 4.9 from 52 Google reviews (checked Oct 8, 2026). It is one location, not an average for all of ours.

“We were getting repeat electric surges. They tested everything and fixed the cause of it. Bye, bye power issues!”
