Local conditions

Older bungalows, hillside lots and aging panels: what shapes electrical work in Pasadena

Many Pasadena homes are decades old, and what is in their walls is not always what the plans say. Original plaster is a good reason to test before opening anything. Detached garages and back houses often hang on one long feeder that has seen a lot of years.

Customers on our Pasadena profile mention the same things: new appliances that did not work well with an older panel, and the usefulness of a panel with every breaker labeled. Our guides on flickering lights in Pasadena and breakers that keep tripping in Pasadena go into the common causes.

  • Whether the problem is in the house or only in a garage or outbuilding
  • How much original plaster or finish has to be protected
  • Where tools and materials can be placed without blocking a shared driveway
  • Whether new appliances have been added to an older panel

Field notes

A Pasadena garage freezer that lost power while the house stayed on

✓ Completed Sep 8, 2018

What we found and fixed

In a 1920s Pasadena bungalow, the garage freezer kept losing power while the house stayed supplied. Under load the garage connection fell from 120V to 103V, with heat at one accessible splice. We renewed the aged feeder splice in a listed enclosure and measured 119V at freezer start-up and under a test load.

A detached garage can lose useful voltage even when every house circuit appears normal.

Our electrician from Pasadena

Our electrician’s advice: if the garage freezer loses power, note whether other garage equipment fails at the same moment. It tells us where to look.

Safer lighting along a duplex side passage

A Pasadena duplex needed light along a narrow side path that both homes use. We marked the steps and the gate, chose low-glare fixtures for those points, and checked the aim through the neighbors’ bedroom windows so the light stayed on the path.

A porch light that switched at the wrong times

After a new trellis went up, a Pasadena porch light began switching unpredictably. The trellis had shaded the photocell. We moved the sensing point and watched a dusk changeover to confirm it.

One question from the freezer job: could the problem be in the house wiring? Readings on the garage supply, not a search through the plaster walls, showed where it was.
