Overview

What wiring repair covers and when it is the right fix

Electrical wiring repair means finding a damaged or faulty section of wiring and fixing that section, not tearing out the whole house. Typical signs are a group of lights or outlets that suddenly went dead, a switch that controls the wrong outlet, exposed wire, burn marks or sparks. Wiring repair starts from $69, and you can call (213) 322-0128 to talk it through. See our full range of electrical services for the rest of what we do.

Burning smell from an outlet

A burning smell, melting or sparks at an outlet, a switch or the panel is urgent. Stop using it and switch the circuit off if you can do so safely. If there is smoke or fire, call 911. Then call us. Read about our emergency electrician service.

What we do

1

A dead circuit traced to its cause

A group of lights or outlets that stopped together, followed back to where the wiring breaks.

2

Damaged cable replaced

A cable cut, crushed or pierced by a screw or a fixing, replaced where it is damaged.

3

Burnt or loose connections

Connections that have worked loose or overheated, repaired and checked.

4

A splice buried outside a box is brought into an accessible, proper junction.

5

Wiring damaged during a renovation

Cables hit or disturbed by new framing, fixings or storage.

6

Switch and outlet wiring corrected

A switch that controls the wrong thing, or an outlet that turns off with the light.

Pricing

What wiring repair starts at and what changes the price

How much does wiring repair cost? Wiring repair starts from $69. That is a starting price, and the final price is confirmed once we have seen the fault.

We discuss the price on the call, so there is no total on this page. A single damaged cable and a run of faults across several rooms are very different jobs.

The visit

How we trace a wiring fault, step by step

  • Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes.
  • Tell us what failed and when, and what was changed nearby. If something was drilled or fixed to a wall or ceiling recently, tell us exactly where.
  • We agree a time. Same-day service is possible in many cases, and if not, it is usually the next day or within a few days.
  • The electrician traces the fault with testing equipment, and explains what was found. If the cause is still unclear, see electrical repair.
  • We discuss the price, and you decide.
  • The repair is done, the circuit and connections are tested, and the area is left tidy.

Field notes

Field notes: fixings, loft junctions and hidden splices

✓ Completed Nov 24, 2025

Lights in a loft went on and off after a storage platform was built. Instead of blaming one worn connection, we looked at what the platform had changed. We found a cable crushed at a support. We replaced that section, rerouted it clear of the platform and checked the neighboring conductors so the repair stopped where the damage stopped. The lights stayed steady and the stored items no longer pressed on the wiring.

The position of a new fixing can be the most useful clue after a sudden circuit failure.

Our electrician

Our electrician’s advice: include the exact location of recent drilling when you report a newly dead circuit.

A utility-room cable hit by door-frame screws

✓ Completed Aug 30, 2015

An outlet circuit failed after screws went into a new door frame. Tracing found a screw through one cable at the frame edge. Removing the screw would not have repaired the damage it had done, so we replaced that section through accessible junctions and protected the crossing. The owner received photos before the finish went back. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 300 and 314.

A bathroom splice hidden outside a box

✓ Completed Feb 20, 2025

A renovation exposed a splice with no box. Hiding it again behind tile would have left it impossible to maintain. We agreed a position with the contractor, made the connection in an accessible listed junction before the wall closed and gave the owner a photo and its location.
