Local conditions

Early-century houses, renovations and mixed-age wiring

The Maplewood house in our case study was from early in the last century, with its original wood trim and wiring from more than one era. We did the neutral corrections through the attic and a closet so the trim stayed untouched.

Working around original trim

Attic and closet access can spare finished walls. We plan the route before we open anything.

Renovations that stress older circuits

Permits for remodel circuits

Whether a permit is needed depends on the work. We handle it with the local enforcing agency where it applies, and we do not state township rules on this page.

Field notes

From the file: a bedroom light that tripped the breaker

✓ Completed Jul 23, 2024

A bedroom light that tripped the breaker

In a Maplewood house with mixed wiring generations, a renovated bedroom’s protective device tripped whenever the ceiling light came on. The family tied it to the renovation, so we mapped the neutral paths before opening any more finished areas. Tracing found one neutral shared across two separately protected branches. The remodel had combined them in a way the protection could not accept. We separated the neutrals and corrected the circuit grouping at accessible junctions, and the existing conductors were fine to keep. Lighting and outlet tests in both bedrooms showed no interaction. The correction was permitted, and the layout was documented for the rough and final inspections.

A protection trip can reveal an incorrect relationship between two circuits rather than one failed device.

Our electrician from Maplewood

Our electrician’s advice: tell the electrician which room renovations came before a new tripping problem.

A stair landing with no switch

We walked the route and marked where people reach for a switch at each landing. A closet partition gave a wiring route that left the decorative stair plaster alone.

✓ Job completed Jun 4, 2022

An attic fan that stopped when its control warmed

The fan started, then stopped, so replacing the motor was a poor first guess. We checked the control against the motor’s load, replaced the unsuitable controller and tested temperature-triggered operation.
