Overview

Ceiling fan installation: what it involves and when you need a pro

Ceiling fan installation can mean hanging a fan you already bought, replacing a light with a fan or swapping an old fan for a new one. The part that needs an electrician is what is above the ceiling: the box, the support and the wiring. Installation starts from $79. Call (213) 322-0128 or send the form. See our electrical services overview for everything else we do.

A fan moves and pulls on its support, so a box that held a light is not automatically strong enough. That is the first thing we check.

Pricing

What ceiling fan installation costs and what changes it

How much does ceiling fan installation cost? It starts from $79. The price depends on what is above the ceiling and how the fan is controlled.

We give the price on the phone before booking. If you have a photo of the ceiling box or the support label, send it, because it helps us price the job.

The visit

How the visit goes: box check, mounting and a full-speed test

  • Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes.
  • Tell us if you have bought the fan, what the ceiling is like and whether it replaces a light. A photo of the ceiling box helps.
  • We agree a time. Same-day service is possible in many cases, and if not, it is usually the next day or within a few days. We do not promise a time before we hear about the job.
  • The electrician checks the box, the ground and the wiring.
  • The fan is assembled and mounted, with any support it needs.
  • We run the fan at every speed, check for movement and clean up.

Field notes

Field notes: a pendant box, a sloped ceiling and a patio fan

✓ Completed Dec 7, 2024

A bedroom had a decorative box that had held a pendant light, and the owner wanted a fan there. The box had no fan-support marking. Inspection showed it was attached to a light-duty bracket that was not rated for a moving fan. We fitted a listed fan-support assembly and mounted the fan to its specified hardware, then ran it at every speed with no unusual movement. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 314.27 and 422.

A ceiling box that holds a pendant is not automatically suitable for a moving fan.

Our electrician

Our electrician’s advice: send a photograph of the existing ceiling support label when you ask for a fan installation.

A sloped-ceiling room

✓ Completed Jun 8, 2025

A room with a sloped ceiling needed a fan with an approved angle adapter and the right downrod. We checked the room’s dimensions and the beams before choosing the hardware, then ran the fan at every speed and went over the clearances with the owner.

A fan for a covered patio

✓ Completed Dec 30, 2025

A covered patio is still exposed to the weather, so we did not assume an indoor fan would do. We picked a fan with a suitable rating, checked its support and fitted compatible controls.
