Overview
Does your house need a full rewire? Signs to look for
Whole house rewiring replaces the wiring throughout a property. It starts from $2,999, and the estimate is free. Call (213) 322-0128 or book an estimate. See all of the electrical services we offer for smaller jobs.
Signs that house rewiring may be on the table:
- Brittle or crumbling insulation on the wires.
- Circuits that cut out now and then with no clear cause.
- A mix of old and new wiring from different decades.
- Knob-and-tube wiring found during a renovation.
- An old panel that cannot be fixed in a simple way.
- A buyer or an insurer raising a concern about the wiring.
None of these on its own means a full rewire. We look first. Our blog posts on rewiring before selling an older home and knob-and-tube wiring cover the background.

Pricing
What it costs to rewire a house: starting price and what moves it
How much does it cost to rewire a house? Whole house rewiring starts from $2,999, and the estimate is free. We do not show an example total, because the size and the age of the house change it too much.
The free estimate applies to whole-house rewiring. We explain the price in writing before the work starts.

Decision guide
Rewire, repair, convert aluminum or phase the work?
| Your situation | Best fit | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| One damaged section of wiring | Repair that section | Repairing damaged wiring |
| Aluminum branch wiring | Fix the connections or convert to copper | Aluminum wiring replacement |
| Knob-and-tube or mixed old wiring | Rewire | See our knob-and-tube blog |
| An occupied house you want to do in stages | Phased rewire, room by room | See the field notes below |
| You want the wiring checked first | Inspection | Having your wiring inspected |
Knob-and-tube wiring replacement is a rewire. Some insurers have their own rules on it, and we cannot speak for them. Read our blog post on knob-and-tube wiring and insurance in California and ask your insurer.
The visit
How a rewire is planned and sequenced
- Call us, or send the form. A form request gets a callback in about 5 minutes. Tell us the age of the house, the number of storeys and any wiring you know about.
- We schedule the free estimate visit. Availability is confirmed on the call, and we do not promise dates.
- The electrician evaluates the whole house and what to replace first.
- You get the scope and the price in writing.
- We agree an occupancy plan, so you know which rooms are unavailable at each stage.
- The work is done in stages, with access and patching handled as agreed.
- Each circuit is tested, the inspection is arranged where a permit is needed, and you receive the handover record.
How long does it take? That depends on the size of the house, the access and whether you live in it during the work, so we give the time on the estimate, not before.
Field notes
Field notes: old houses, renovations and conversions
An older house was being renovated, and the owner reported several circuits that cut out and wanted the wiring done before new finishes. Accessible inspection found brittle insulation across many branches and hidden alterations nobody had recorded. Isolated repairs were a poor fit for that much deterioration, so we replaced the planned branch wiring with a room-by-room circuit design. The rooms were done in order, and only zones that passed their checks went back into use. Insulation, polarity, grounding and function checks passed on every completed circuit. The permit was prepared and the rough inspections came before the walls were closed. The relevant reference is NFPA 70 (NEC), 210, 300 and 406.
A rewiring project needs an occupancy plan as well as a cable layout.
Our electrician
Our electrician’s advice: agree who restores each wall opening before you approve a whole-house rewiring scope.
A renovation with historic finishes
A complete renovation needed mixed generations of wiring replaced while some historic finishes stayed. The owner marked the surfaces to keep before the layout was fixed. We routed through service spaces where we could and renewed the circuits in stages, with each stage inspected before the finishes were restored. The owner followed progress from a room-and-circuit record.
A house conversion with new bedrooms and an office
A conversion added sleeping rooms and a home office. Replacing the old cable along the same routes would have kept the old layout’s problems, so we first collected how each room would be used, then set the outlets, lighting controls and circuits to match. The wiring was inspected before the rooms were finished.

Customer feedback
What customers say about rewiring and old wiring
This comment comes from our Montecito profile on Google, which is rated 4.9 from 57 reviews (checked Oct 8, 2026). It is one location, not an average for all of ours, and we do not suggest the job was done elsewhere.

Common questions
Rewiring questions homeowners ask
Is the estimate free?
Yes, for whole-house rewiring. Free estimates apply only to panel upgrades, panel installation, breaker replacement and whole-house rewiring.
How soon can someone come?
Same day in many cases. Otherwise the next day or within a few days. We confirm on the call and do not promise a date before we hear about the job.
Who will come to my house?
A Red Electricians technician. We are licensed and insured.
Can you add a panel upgrade or extra outlets in the same job?
Yes. Tell us when you call. See electrical panel upgrade.
Do I need to move out during a rewire?
It depends on the scope and the phasing. In our Sep 22, 2025 case, rooms were done in order and only checked zones went back into use.
Does rewiring affect insurance or selling?
We cannot speak for insurers. Read our blog posts on knob-and-tube wiring and insurance in California and rewiring before selling. California’s SB 382 is a seller notice that advises buyers it may be advisable to inspect, not a rule to inspect.
What permits are needed?
It varies by city. We tell you what applies to your job, and we prepare the permit where one is needed.
Do you offer a warranty?
Red Electricians offers a standard warranty on its work. Ask your technician for the details when you call.
