What we handle

Topanga electrician for older cabins, hillside homes and everyday repairs

Up in the canyon, a pump that will not restart or a deck circuit that trips in the rain is more than an annoyance. Access can be steep, the house may be decades old and the nearest hardware store is not close, so we plan the visit before we leave.

When you call we ask what happens, when it happens and how to reach the equipment. Then we give you the price over the phone. To see where else we work, browse the areas we serve.

Local conditions

Hillside access, well pumps and wet-season circuits: local conditions to plan for

Hillside sites change the job. On a recent pump repair the equipment had to be carried by hand along a steep path, and the visit had to be planned around the time the cabin would be without water.

Weather does the rest. Rain driven sideways by wind can find a cable entry that stays dry in an ordinary shower, and older cabins often have wiring that no one has looked at in years. Our Topanga customers describe the same worries: outlets dead after an outage, and wiring in a house built decades ago.

  • Whether a pump stops before it starts or after it reaches speed
  • Whether the fault only appears in wind and rain
  • How steep and narrow the access to the equipment is
  • How old the wiring is and whether anyone has checked it

Field notes

A cabin pump that stopped whenever the motor tried to start: field notes

A cabin pump that stopped whenever the motor tried to start

A Topanga hillside cabin lost water pressure each time the well pump tried to restart. The motor drew 34A at start-up and a worn contact in the disconnect dropped 18V, while the motor windings tested fine. We fitted a correctly rated motor disconnect, renewed the terminations and ran five demand starts to confirm steady pressure. Water was off for three hours.

A motor’s starting load can expose contact deterioration that an unloaded meter reading misses.

Our electrician from Topanga

Our electrician’s advice: tell us whether the pump stops before it starts or after it reaches normal speed. The inspection for the disconnect was arranged around when the pump was available.

A deck circuit that tripped only in wind-driven rain

The cabin owner noticed the circuit failed only when rain blew from one direction. We found a compromised cable gland at the final enclosure, renewed it and tested after everything had dried.

A small backup battery for communications

A Topanga property wanted internet to stay on during short outages. We separated the router and chargers from the workshop tools, set up the battery the manufacturer’s way and showed the owner its real runtime.

A question that came up on the pump job: do we need a new pump? Testing showed the motor was fine, and the old disconnect contacts were the cause.
